Where are they now?

Lieutenant Pigeon

A spin-off from an experimental music band Stavely Makepeace, Lieutenant Pigeon (an anagram of Genuine Potential) was fronted by Rob Woodward and managed by him and drummer Nigel Fletcher. Woodward’s mother, Hilda, played the honky-tonk piano that featured on their 1972 number 1 hit ‘Mouldy Old Dough’. It also made her one of the oldest female artists to appear on ‘Top of the Pops‘ at that time. There was a Blue Plaque unveiled at 25 Kingsway, Coventry in 2022 to commemorate fifty years since the song was recorded at that address.

They had a another hit with ‘Desperate Dan’, also released in 1972, which reached number 17.

They are still around making music, mainly under the Stavley Makepeace name. Check out their Facebook page

The 1970s certainly saw many weird and wonderful songs top the charts, but none were as good as this one is in this writer’s humble opinion…
