33 1/3 RPM Kate Nash – 9 Sad Symphonies

Bandcamp

Album number five from Kate Nash, who scored a big hit with her debut album, 2007’s ‘Made of Bricks’, which included the hit ‘Foundations’.

Her last album, 2018’s ‘Yesterday Was Forever’ failed to chart, however, music is not all about chart placings (unless you are a bit of a chart nerd like me!).

On ‘9 Sad Symphonies’ Kate Nash keeps her everyday, razor sharp lyrics, however, each song is set a grandiose, symphonic backing – symphonic indie pop anyone?

Highlights are ‘Millions Of Heartbeats’ – how this is not all over the airwaves and playlists is a mystery, as it is one the year’s best indie pop tunes. ‘Space Odyssey 2001’ is a humorous song about a first date, and ‘Wasteman’ is a glorious piece of piano led pop.

Maybe her longstanding fans after her more indie rock & punk sound may feel short-changed, yet Nash succeeds in taking her music into a new direction. The arrangements suit her, at times, achingly haunting vocals perfectly.
